Adapt to Thrive.

Ownership consolidations, changing news consumption behaviors and the relentless growth of digital have brought an unprecedented level of disruption to our legacy industry. In times like these, broadcasters need a “developer” not a “consultant.” In philosophy and practice, AR&D embraces a “development partner” service concept that places us in a participatory role (not just a counsel role) with your management team.

Strategic Market Research

Your customer has a story to tell. Do you know what it is? Can you hear it? Will you?

Every business strategy has blind spots – critical decision points where the view ahead is obstructed. Market research and analytics provide a critical roadmap at times like these. They quantify the high-hurdle challenges and pinpoint fertile opportunities. They remove much, not all, of the guesswork and in doing so significantly raise your batting average while reducing risk.

AR&D is your guide to the story in your data. We help you more closely connect to your customers by asking the right questions of the right data so you can move forward with clarity, precision and confidence.

Smart business decisions don’t happen by chance. They are informed by data-driven insights and actionable intelligence. We don’t believe in “data dumps” – handing you a report and leaving you to figure it out. We are data storytellers, pinpointing what matters most and providing clear direction so you can engage your audience, surpass your competition, and thrive in your market.

Let us tell your business’s story.

Pulse Polls

The media business has never moved faster, and consumer trends and sentiment change at an even faster rate.

Today’s media companies need agile market research and data aggregation to gain in-the-moment insights, quickly optimize concepts, or quickly leverage competitive opportunities. The problem is that most media research hasn’t been reinvented to keep pace with these needs and today's technologies. As a result, many stations and broadcast groups gravitate toward personal intuition and internal conversations as substitutes for true consumer insight because they seem like the only options that work in a world of short time frames and comprehensive, cost-prohibitive, one-and-done research studies.

That’s why the AR&D researchers created our Pulse Poll system. It is a robust research platform that fuses technology, methodology and human expertise to deliver actionable insights at the speed of business. The Pulse Poll suite of survey modules are issue-specific, narrowly focused on specific tactical challenges and questions stations regularly face. Corporate-specific metrics and KPIs can be integrated into the platform as needed to track and compare performance.

AUTOMATED SURVEY DESIGNS

By leveraging the power of automation and real-time reporting, AR&D’s Pulse Poll solution enables stations to obtain actionable insights much more quickly and cost-effectively than traditional methods. No proposals and no lengthy questionnaire design discussions mean you get answers when you have questions, not questions when you need answers.

INTERACTIVE DASHBOARDS

No more waiting for custom reports and presentations. Interactive data visualizations instantly turn field data into insight, improving productivity with more time for strategic-level thinking.

INNOVATIVE COLLABORATION FEATURES

More eyes looking at more data in more ways helps stations build a more data-driven culture and act with the agility of a startup, a must in today’s rapidly evolving media ecosystem.

COST-EFFECTIVE, ITERATIVE

The notion of faster, more affordable research isn’t new – time and money have always been challenges. Pulse Polls reduce per-respondent costs by 61% compared to traditional, long-form custom surveys while allowing more consistent, frequent contact with your audience.

Strategic Development

Our Strategists look at the same data but perceive opportunities that others cannot see.

What works in Portland won’t play in Peoria. We reject the one-size-fits all approach many firms use when helping media companies develop a competitive strategy. Your market-specific data, your specific challenges, your competitive landscape, and the resources of your team are just some of the considerations as we partner with you to map a clearly-defined path forward.

Our goal is to help you shape a strategy that moves your organization to occupy and/or maintain a position of market dominance. Even when such dominance has been achieved, the audience expects leaders to continually innovate. Our counsel always includes pioneering ideas that are unseen opportunities. So, in those instances don’t ask us for examples from other media markets.

We believe a strategic plan should be a living document – one that changes with the rapid disruptions that continue to impact all media. Our team assists in crafting your plan, helping monitor your progress, and keeping you abreast of potential disruptions before they impact your market, giving you an advantage over your competitors who don’t seek – and surprisingly sometimes automatically reject – other perspectives..

Corporate Dashboards

Corporate Dashboards

For nearly 40 years, AR&D has been providing ownership groups with data and strategic insight needed to successfully operate their stations and grow audience.  So, we fundamentally understand the disruptive challenges facing broadcasters and, very specifically, the data opportunities that each of the “mega-groups” perceive but have yet to fully embrace.

The idea of data creating business value is not new, however as new operational realities redefine the broadcast industry, the effective use of data is increasingly becoming the basis of competition.

Today’s ownership groups need systems and techniques that not only collect, organize and aggregate vast amounts of audience data but also allow corporate leaders to effectively and efficiently mine that data for meaningful patterns and trends at a local, regional or national level.  That is the value AR&D’s corporate dashboards provide.

Our dashboards are a secure, central repository that house data from all studies conducted by stations in the group. Each corporate user has login and access-level privileges. Robust filtering capabilities allow users to look at data by market or assess trends from national or regional perspective. Dynamic splits instantly filter the data by key audience segments. Standardized metrics provide clear context and perspective by comparing results against established industry benchmarks or station group-specific KPIs. See an interesting finding? Discuss and share results with other executives using the comment field on each chart.

More eyes looking at more data in more ways helps your group build a more data-driven culture and act with the agility of a startup, a must in today’s rapidly evolving media ecosystem.

Time & Motion Workflow Analysis

Time & Motion Workflow Analysis

As broadcast operations struggle to adapt and modernize, they face a key challenge:  Comprehensive systems for analyzing and evaluating how content is produced and delivered do not exist in most organizations.

Managers are therefore forced to rely on experience and intuition as they attempt to measure the impact individuals, departments and processes have on the daily product.  For the modern broadcast operation, the new reality is this:  personal experience and insight are no longer sufficient tools for optimizing newsroom operations.  The lingering blind spots are too large and the decisions too important to be made without access to the right information.  New analytics are needed to inform decision-making and hone gut instincts.

Transforming the operational realities of today into the highly productive and efficient processes and systems of tomorrow requires some significant questions be answered:

  • Is there excess infrastructure and hidden waste that can be reduced?

  • What internal inefficiencies, and replicated efforts, lead to wasted employee time and increased operating costs?

  • What time-consuming activities need to be re-designed or re-assigned to different employees to lower their inherent cost to the organization?

  • How effectively is the content created being distributed and utilized across the available platforms – on-air, online and social media?

  • What technological systems pose barriers to moving content between platforms and, more generally, to changing the traditional roles and duties of a given position group?

The answers to these questions vary markedly, even among comparable stations or those within the same broadcast group.  Each has different capabilities, processes and operational gaps.  No “one size fits all” plan would apply or be successful.  Using AR&D’s Time and Motion studies, broadcasters are able to avoid scatter shot changes and focus their re-engineering efforts on specific problem areas.  The study defines, in detail, the period of time required for each employee to conduct key tasks during a normal workday. And, our analysis will provide the actual annual cost of those tasks so station leadership can fully understand the financial implications of each activity in light of the expectations and responsibilities of each position group. The end-result is a comprehensive data set and blueprint for transforming and re-aligning operational resources.
