I think it's safe to say that Tim Robbins surprised the NAB. There should be no reason for this. Tim Robbins is Tim Robbins. There was no Earthly reason to have him here. And I write this as a genuine fan of his. But what does he know about broadcasting, news, journalism, new media or any of the challenges facing the industry? By his own admission, not much. They brought in Tim for celebrity value. What the NAB got was a funny speech. But it was swear-laden, and it was a sucker punch. Robbins is - you may have noticed - a man of distinct political views. And when you're trying to convince the world that there's no liberal media bias, maybe having Tim Robbins as the keynote speaker ain't the best idea. Where are the innovators to address broadcasters who need to hear about change? Where are the people who have shown leadership online and in business? Tim Robbins? Really?
Really. Watch and enjoy. I shot this on my $100 Flip camera, off
the big screen in the auditorium. It may not be broadcast quality, but you're seeing it here first. Click through the permalink on this story and you'll see the camera icon. Or you can watch it from our AR-D homepage. (Told you... we're still in beta.) It's in segments.
Tim Robbins?
